| I know that some people are getting emails from my parents and others
as to what is going on with my health, etc. So I would actually like to
clear up some of the confusion, because I know my mom is hard to
understand... if you are getting her emails, I am sure you know what I
mean.
What I have is called optic neuritis. It is an inflamation of the optic
nerve, which causes partial sight loss/irritation of the eye. Mine
happens to be the right eye. It began last Saturday when Jake, Ivy and
I were heading up to IL to spend Christmas with family. I noticed that
I couldn't see correctly out of the my right eye- that there was
something like a blurry spot in the middle. I didn't think too much of
it at the time, and just thought it would clear up on its own. However,
it didn't.
I was able to get in to see an optometrist on the 26th. He did a bunch
of tests and finally determined that I had some swelling or bleeding
going on somewhere behind the retina and that was what was causing the
sight loss. But because he wasn't quite sure, he referred me to a
retina specialist- thankfully we were able to get in that next morning
at 8:30am.
Once again, a lot more tests were done. This specialists determined
that I did not have any maculra degeneration going on (which is what
the optometrist had originally thought). However, he told me that I
needed to have an MRI done on my brain to see if there were any
spots/lesions that could be causing the swelling behind my retina. So,
we were scheduled for an MRI that afternoon.
The MRI results showed that I did have a couple of small lesions on my
brain. Meaning? Meaning that I am at a higher risk of getting Multiple
Sclerosis in the future than people that don't have any spots/lesions
on their brain. Therefore, I need to start steroid treatment asap to
reduce the risk of getting MS. The steroids will also help my eyesight
get back to normal within a week or two.
So, no, I don't have MS. I am going in for steroid treatment on
Wednesday, and it will last for five days. I am at a higher risk of
getting MS because of the lesions, but it is only about 30% chance that
I will, and it will be between 5-15 years from now.
I hope I have cleared up any confusion- you know how fast news travels,
and I just wanted to personally tell all of you what is really going
on. I'll post updates as time goes by. Hopefully by this time next
week, I will have my sight back in my right eye. It sure is a pain
living without it :) Let me know if you have any questions! I would
appreciate your prayers as well, it's kind of a weird/scary thing to
deal with right now- especially while having to take care of a 9 month
old.
Speaking of which, if you want to see some newer pics of my precious little girl, go here- http://flickr.com/photos/7458616@N06/

| So... Thanksgiving was alright. Jake's dad built us a new railing for our staircase so that Ivy won't fall through. We played Dominoes-Mexican Train for hours. We watched "Hairspray"- which was alright, but definitely not a movie I would watch again. We ate lots of turkey, sweet potato casserole, green beans... the usual Thanksgiving food.
And now I am not in the mood to decorate for Christmas. It just feels weird this year, like Christmas shouldn't be here quite yet. I don't know. I think we're going to put up the tree this afternoon, and maybe a couple of other things as well, we'll just have too see what kind of mood we are in when we get home from church later on.
I'm helping with childcare this morning at church. Never done that before, so it'll be challenging, I am sure.
Ivy's been doing good. She got her flu shot last week, so hopefully she won't get any nasty flu bugs this season. She's definitely not fitting into any of her 6-9 month old clothes anymore.
Gotta go to church. | | |
| I have been asking myself this question over the past couple of days... I am my parents. I am spanking! I am saying "no" a thousand times a day, and I am wondering if I am doing anything right. Oh my, I guess I never really thought that there would come a day when Ivy would actually INTENTIONALLY do "bad" things to get my attention, or to show off her own independent-hood. I guess the fun is all just beginning now :) If anyone has any parenting skills to share with me, please do.
Our parent-teacher educator just left and I have put Ivy down for a much-needed nap. It was an interesting meeting this morning because... well, I have two conflicting views of parenting that are intertwining in my life. I am right in the middle of reading and doing a Bible study on Dr.James Dobson's book "Dare to Discipline" (a swat on the butt is called for when a child is intentionally denouncing/not listening to what you are trying to teach) and then my parent-teacher educator is a strong "Love and Logic" advocate- saying that I need to let Ivy scream and be mad because she needs to learn how to express her emotions. So, it will be fun over the next year or so, to see how Ivy turns out. Maybe she'll be super misguided... agh.
In other news- I can't believe Thanksgiving is a week from today! I love love love Thanksgiving, and I look forward to it as much as I do to Christmas. It's about being with family and dwelling on everything that we have to be thankful for. I praise God for the opportunity to live in a country where more freedoms abound than in any other country in the world, I praise him for my little family that He has created to be perfect just for me, I praise Him for being able to be content where I am and see the good things in life that are so abundant everywhere I look, for faithful friends, supportive, loving parents and in-laws... the list could go on and on. When I got married, Alysa Clark (an old teacher-friend) from high school, gave Jake and I a Thanksgiving booklet. It was a journal of sorts- every night before bed, we write in it and thank God for different things that come to mind. Then, at Thanksgiving, we review the booklet, for all the things over the past year (s) that we have been thankful for. It's awesome, because it's so easy to forget how God is been so great to us.
I need to paint our bedroom and bathroom. I bought the paint the week I found out I was pregnant, last June, and STILL have not painted anything. And Kat, you just need to set a date and let Trina and I know so we can get all your painting done too. January might be good? Let us know :)
Well, I am off to the bank and grocery store... after Ivy wakes up. But I've just run out of things to say for now. Happy Thanksgiving, if I don't get on here before then.
